Learning from Nyborg Castle

The Danish Government’s Agency for Culture and Palaces has invited Jan to talk about our work with interpreting and revitalizing one of Denmark’s most important cultural heritage sites, the Nyborg Castle, at their 2020 Restoration Seminar. Here, he will talk about the challenges and concerns sourced by the development of the new visitor center alongside collaborators Lars Juel Thiis from Cubo and Mette Viuf Larsen from VMB Arkitekter.

“There is a clear distinction, yet strong relationship between new and old, and we don’t want to plagiarize or romanticize history. So the question is: How do you create a contemporary extension that respects the heritage and history, but is also a product of the present?” – Jan Y. Tanaka, Partner and Architect
