Harboøre Activity Landscape

Both building and landscape, the Harboøre Activity Landscape provides a sheltered space while allowing seamless transition between indoor and outdoor activities.

Located in Harboøre, the Activity Landscape introduces a model for a low-cost sports hall offering an informal space that encourages recreation all day and all year round.

Since opening in 2015, the Activity Landscape has become a popular focal point in Harboøre. Contrasting more closed-off, conventional sports halls, the openness of the design encourages a wide range of uses beyond sports. The Activity Landscape has hosted flee-markets, concerts, events and gatherings, it is used by people of all ages.

The architecture iconic, yet simple, allowing more focus on the activity landscape inside and outside the building.

The simple structural frame is clad with polycarbonate sheets. The building is essentially a large shelter that provides ample natural lighting but minimal glare.

Hills of grass, asphalt and concrete create a wide variety of vibrant spaces. The non-prescriptive nature of the of the undulating playscape invites both formal and informal activities. The smooth asphalt and concrete hills are perfect for skating and bicycling. The grass hills are suited for climbing, running and tumbling down. The hills and their surfaces create a spatial composition that encourages recreation and social interaction, while still providing users with a flexible, multi-use environment.
