Holbæk Landscape Arena

Holbæk Landscape Arena is a masterplan that rethinks the conventional sports and athletic arena by blending the activities into the natural landscape. The masterplan merges the building facilities with the park, creating a place for the elite and amateur athletes as well as a place for the general public. It is an arena for few and a landscape for everybody.

Today, the site is an agricultural field. Due to nature’s ability to regenerate, we simple propose modelling the terrain and connecting small lakes and watering holes to create a continuous water network. The flow of water will ensure nutrients and hydrate seeds that will grow into wild flowers, grass, trees and vegetation. The modelled terrain will create space for large and small activities, and spaces for quiet contemplation.

Acknowledging that it will take time to build all the facilities for the arena, by letting nature grow uncontrolled, it will ensure a landscape that has both strong aesthetic and recreational value, long before the arena is completed.

The approach introduces a new type of common space in Holbæk where city and arena, sport and culture, building and nature evolve side by side. A place where participators, spectators and casual visitors alike are naturally invited in to form the community around the Holbæk Landscape Arena.

THE COMMON LANDSCAPE

Today, the site is a mono-functional agricultural field. It is open and vast, yet it does not invite nor encourage human activity. By helping the natural landscape freely regenerate, it will ensure that the site has both strong aesthetic and recreational value long before the arena is completed.
