We are presenting our vision for the future Våland, Stavanger
We and our friends from SLA and Alexandria Algard Architects have been privileged to work with a parallel assignment in Våland, Stavanger, exploring how to transform the existing hospital into a vibrant and integral part of the city. Over the next 15 years, the hospital’s functions will gradually relocate to a new site at Ullandhaug, while the Våland area, bit by bit, opens up new possibilities.
This project seeks to thoughtfully plan for the future, discussing how urban planning can align with planetary boundaries in the coming years. Our strategy is centred on the key principles:
• Demolish as little as possible • Find the right program for the existing structures, rather than reshaping to fit a desired program • Open up, both mentally and physically • Fill in and densify.
With this strategy, we made a proposal that prioritizes people, integrates green spaces, removes cars, and returns the area to the surrounding neighbourhoods – making it an intertwined part of the future Stavanger. By introducing functions that provide social interaction between neighbourhoods and providing affordable housing options, our vision for Våland is a bold reimagining of how the area can weave into the urban fabric of Stavanger on human terms
