Grønlikaia Neighbourhood

For many pedestrians, cyclists and commuters arriving from the south, Grønlikaia is the first meeting with Oslo city centre. Currently full of containers and asphalt, the area will be replaced by bustling city life, new homes and offices when Grønlikaia will be transformed from a closed harbor area into Oslo's new fjord district.

Located at the beautiful Oslo fjord, our proposal for a the sub-area Lohavn seeks to create a lively neighbourhood focusing on social amplification and biodiversity both on land and on water.

A THREE-PART GRIP

Grønlikaia presents a unique opportunity to reimagine the dynamic interaction between the city and the fjord. Here, synergies and livelihoods must be created contributing to a better fjord for life of all kinds. Our architectural approach is based on the three sections: the harbour front, the neighbourhood, and the facade.

A LIVELY HARBOUR FRONT

The natural environment at Grønlikaia shouldn’t be perceived merely as a green extension of the land; rather, it should be envisioned as interconnected blue-green landscapes where rainwater, fjord water, trees, and seaweed seamlessly contribute to a harmonious whole.

VIBRANT NEIGHBOURHOOD

The constructions on land is based on smooth transitions between private and public space with open neighbourhood buildings and sheltered courtyards. The courtyards open up to the south-west and step down towards the quayside.
