Kimbrer Pavilion Aars

Located at the city square, the Kimbrer Pavilion is designed as an attractive gathering place for the citizens and visitors of the northern Danish town Aars. The vision is to create a place that brings together the city’s cultural and business life in a respectful interaction with the surroundings and especially the famous artwork 'Muren' (The Wall) by Per Kirkeby that makes the city square unique.

The pavilion is designed with a huge ‘floating’ roof that makes it open and inviting. It leads the visitors towards the square and thus creates a link between street life and square activities.

The square

The central square in Aars is well known for its spectacular artwork. The remarkable construction “Muren” (in English: “The Wall”), by the famous Danish artist Per Kirkeby, was one reason why it was important for us to consider the location of the new structure carefully.

A covered urban space

The structure is made from wood covered by a tile-clad roof. The selection of locally sourced, durable materials makes the structure simple to build and maintain. A system of build-in, weatherproof curtains will make possible to shield the space furtherly beneath the pavilion.

MULTI FUNCTIONAL

On a sunny day, the pavilion functions as a natural extension of the activities on the square, but when it’s raining, built-in weather-resistant curtains can be pulled down and offer the necessary shelter. On special occasions, the Kimbrer Pavilion can be transformed into a market hall, concert venue, movie showroom, lecture hall and much more.
