Torghallen

Torghallen, located in central Katrineholm, combines affordable housing and a market hall. It blends city living and public life into a cohesive urban experience. Located between the station area and town plaza, it is the focal point in Katrineholm. The scheme acts as a landmark and provides the backdrop that defines the town’s two most important public spaces.

Today, the site is occupied by an arcade that provides a sheltered public space and waiting area for the bus. Despite acting as a distinct border between plaza and station area, the open arcade allows for visual connections between the two public spaces.

Torghallen maintains this visual connection while transforming the existing arcade into a hybrid housing and market hall. Instead of separating the two public spaces, the building opens itself up to the surroundings, allowing activity to spill out and public life to flow in.

Architecturally conceived as a spatial framework, it is open on the ground floor and inhabited on the three upper floors. The materiality, tectonic components and spatial intricacies introduce human-scale spaces that are light, open and inviting.

Torghallen received a second prize amongst 137 proposals. The jury stated "The clear concept of a light building that touches the ground in few points creates a strong connection and transparency between the surrounding urban spaces... The structural motif in the ground floor and floors above creates a strong expression, which is very precise and playful at the same time... The proposal has innovative social possibilities, which appears simple, almost obvious, yet very intricate and delicate."

HOUSING, URBAN SPACE AND MARKET HALL

Located in between Stortorget and the station, we propose a building volume that redefines the town plaza by combining private housing with a public market hall that generates urban activity throughout the area.

HOUSING

The affordable housing is located on top of the market hall. All apartments have abundant daylight, terraces on one side, and an upgraded circulation space, which also functions as common spaces meant to encourage and strengthening community interaction.
