Watchmans Hut

The Watchman’s Hut is a studio space that provides artists with an opportunity to commit themselves to a period of solitary reflection in nature. It is an opportunity for inspiration, tranquility and creativity.

The design confronts the inevitability of human traces in a natural landscape that should remain undisturbed.

How do you place a human-made object in a pristine natural environment?

How do you leave an imprint that does not spoil but rather enhances an experience?

We created a basic hut that is covered with mirrors. By doing so, two opposing entities, the natural world and built world, form a mutual interaction.

The hut is perceived as a part of the reflected surroundings and the natural environment is accentuated through the hut.

Dividing the hut into different functions – main hut (with sleeping area and kitchen), atelier and bath hut, the views are composed in relationship to the site.

The Watchmans Hut is a collaboration with artists Anne and Lars Traegde.

NATURE vs CULTURE

When one looks at the huts, one sees the surrounding nature. When one looks at the natural landscape, one discovers the huts. Despite being opposing entities, the Watchman’s Hut creates an interdependence between its architecture and its surrounding natural landscape.
